KAREN'S IS ONE OF THE GREAT DISCOVERIES of Sackets Harbor. Offering Lunch & Bistro (Simple) dinners. Karen's specializes in a variety of homemade selections including her version of the famous Philly Cheesesteak. Karen's offers a variety of wine and beer including the famous local 1812 Brew and Yuengling, a big favorite brewed in nearby Pennsylvania.
YES, THERE IS A REAL KAREN. She started the idea of Karen's in Hopewell, New Jersey (next to Princeton) many years ago. Known as Karen's at Brookside, she became a legend for good food, especially her version of the Philly Cheesesteak. Karen's at Brookside fame grew attracting hungry people from up and down the east coast, and from around the globe.
OVER THE YEARS IN NEW JERSEY she served many well known and less well known people, including the Crown Prince of Morocco and his body guard. Karen was especially impressed with the body guard; she said she had never before fed a "bodyguard". Karen's at Brookside always offered a lot of laughs and fun with locals and out of town visitors. It was the "Don't miss stop" for many state and local politicians of both the left, the right, and the in-between! Then there was the circus gorilla in a tractor trailer which broke down in her parking lot one Saturday afternoon. Needless to say, Karen had her own circus that day; fun was had by all. The whole story is told by the magazine "Weird New Jersey", which can be found through www.weirdus.com. A couple of nutty New Jersey guys grabbed the gorilla story for their crazy, fun publication. Karen learned that the gorilla was more "human" than "gorilla". She gave him a cone of her delicious homemade ice cream which he eagerly devoured until he suddenly threw it on the ground for a can of beer. Yes folks, a can of beer supplied by the truck driver. Can you imagine a tipsy gorilla??
So life was fun until the State of New Jersey took Karen's property under eminent domain for an intersection. The public fought the state with the argument that the only "public good" in the public's opinion was keeping Karen's in place - not an intersection. Well, having lost the N. J. battle, Karen moved to Karen's at the Boathouse, Sackets Harbor, NY, along with her laughs and good humor!
